The Westminster Documents

The Documents available here closely mirror the original documents prepared by the Westminster Divines in London 1627-1651. They have been made-over into modern English by John Barrs and copyrighted by him 2001-2011. The Catechisms were merely 'translated' into modern English with no comments. The Confession itself was not only translated but also more thoroughly explained; for the Holy Spirit has worked into the Church since the seventeenth century and some modern understandings have developed since then. For instance; the Christian understanding of the relationship between church and state has changed significantly since the days of of the Cavaliers and Roundheads.

Please read the Introductions and please note that these documents are not the version that we as a denomination formally accept which are the original 17th century documents. If you wish to see those then .

To modernise the classic documents of the church is an ongoing project: for instance, contemporary to the Westminster Documents is "The Directory of Public Worship"approved by the Scottish Parliament in AD 1645 which is in first-draught mode. The Heidleberg Catechism is also in progress.
